What is an Online Doctor Consultation?

Online doctor consultation is a telehealth service that allows you to connect instantly with a licensed local doctor through video calls.

This service can address many of the same conditions typically treated at traditional healthcare facilities, offering a convenient and efficient alternative for obtaining medical assistance, especially when you’re in an unfamiliar city.

When Should You Visit a Clinic in France Instead?

If you have any of these conditions or needs that online urgent care can’t address, it might be best to visit the nearest clinic:

  • Minor injuries: sprains, strains, small cuts requiring stitches, minor burns
  • X-rays: for minor injuries like sports injuries
  • Dental Care: urgent dental care for severe dental pain or dental trauma
  • Vaccinations: it’s not uncommon to need vaccinations while traveling from country to country. Very often this service is available in travel clinic but also in some urgent care centers
  • Access to medical specialists: very often urgent care centers provide access to pediatric urgent care, orthopedic specialists and ultrasound scan
  • Sports physicals: you’re planning to run the marathon in Paris? You will need a medical certificate to confirm you’re in  good health and capable of handling the physical demands of a marathon

How Online Virtual Care Can Assist Tourists

Online doctor appointments can be a game-changer for tourists, who often have tight schedules and are unfamiliar with local healthcare options. Platforms like Doctorsa make it incredibly fast and easy to consult with a doctor remotely.

If you encounter minor health issues while traveling, you can quickly connect with a doctor online to receive the medical advice or prescriptions you need, allowing you to stay on track with your travel plans and enjoy a worry-free trip.

Benefits of a Virtual Consultation

  • Eliminate Travel Time and Hassle
  • Super Fast Response 24/7/365
  • Talk to an English-Speaking Doctor
  • Ease of Mind and Reduced Stress
  • Perfect for Minor Ailments and Forgotten Medication
  • Not Suitable for Life Threatening Conditions

Online doctor visits are perfect for travelers with minor health issues, saving you time and hassle while on holiday. No need for transportation or dealing with local clinics. Unlike limited retail clinics, platforms like Doctorsa handle many medical issues. They reduce stress by connecting you with English-speaking doctors, ensuring clear communication and personalized care without language barriers.

Online Doctor Vs. In-person Consultation Vs. Emergency Hospitals

Here’s a general guideline:

  • Online Doctors for minor issues that do not require in-person medical care but are still urgent (e.g. sore throat, UTI, flu, etc.)
  • In-person Consultations for minor issues that need specialist, same-day, in-person attention but are not life threatening (e.g. urgent care with x-rays, sprains, cuts requiring stitches, etc.)
  • Emergency Hospitals for severe, potentially life-threatening problems that need immediate, specialized care (e.g. difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, head injury, etc.)

If you’re unsure, it’s safer to go to the nearest emergency hospital. However, remember that wait times in the emergency room can be long. If you go to the emergency room with a minor issue, you might have to wait for hours because more serious cases will be seen first.

Knowing where to go can make a big difference in getting the right treatment quickly.

Available Virtual Care Services

Online Virtual Visits

Online doctor consultations let you talk about your symptoms, concerns, and medical history with a licensed physician right from your place. These virtual visits give you urgent care and advice tailored to your needs. Whether you have a non-emergency illness, need a medication refill, or want general healthcare advice, online doctors can provide thorough consultations.

Express Prescriptions

Online doctors can, in many cases, give you prescriptions after virtual care.  Once you complete your online consultation, you receive a copy of the prescription so you can pick it up at the closest pharmacy. This is especially great for travelers who need quick access to meds while they’re away from their usual doctor.

Follow-up Care on the Go

Unlike emergency rooms, where follow-up isn’t possible, online doctors offer ongoing monitoring and follow-up. With online doctor services, you get continued support and guidance during your treatment or recovery. Doctorsa provides free follow-up chat for 7 days, letting you check in with the same provider who initially evaluated you. This continuity of care ensures your progress is closely monitored, and any necessary adjustments or recommendations are made promptly.

You can use your travel or health insurance to pay for your Doctorsa consultation. It’s pretty straightforward. When you’re ready to check out, you’ll see an option to select your insurance carrier and enter your policy details.

Doctorsa works directly with many insurance providers. But even if your provider isn’t on that list, don’t worry! We’ll spend up to a week trying to arrange direct coverage for you. This means you might not have to pay anything out of pocket.

The cost of your consultation will be temporarily held at checkout. Then, once your insurance provider confirms they’ll cover it, that hold is lifted. It’s our way of making sure you get the care you need without the upfront costs.

Virtual Care Stories: Child Sore Throat in France

Review from a patient who used the online doctor France service: Great experience, easy to get an appointment via video. Prescription came in no problem and pharmacy in France had no issues. Would recommend.

Last summer, my family and I were on vacation in France when my 7-year-old daughter woke up with a sore throat. As a mom, I instantly started worrying about how to get her the medical care she needed in a foreign country. I had so many questions running through my mind: Can I go to the doctor without insurance? How much will it cost to see a doctor in France? Do doctors in France speak English?

Thankfully, I remembered reading about Doctorsa, an online doctor consultation service but I wasn’t sure if there are online doctors in France. I quickly found that Doctorsa offered telehealth appointments that could connect us with a local physician in France as well. This seemed like the perfect solution, especially since I didn’t want to waste time finding a clinic and dealing with unfamiliar healthcare processes.

I logged onto the Doctorsa platform, filled in our details, and within minutes, we were able to speak to a doctor online. The online doctor visit was seamless—our doctor was very kind, and to my relief, spoke perfect English. This made explaining my daughter’s symptoms so much easier. The doctor assured me that it was likely just a minor infection and provided us with a prescription that we could pick up at any local pharmacy.

During the telehealth session, I asked the doctor if it was possible to get medical help in France without insurance, and how much it might cost. The doctor explained that online medical care through platforms like Doctorsa is typically much more affordable than an in-person visit, even without insurance. It was reassuring to know that we could access quality healthcare without breaking the bank.

The entire experience with the online web doctor was incredibly convenient. We avoided the stress of navigating a foreign healthcare system, and my daughter was back to enjoying our vacation in no time. If you’re ever traveling and find yourself asking, Can I speak to a doctor online?, I can’t recommend Doctorsa enough.

Healthcare in France is not expensive. Seeing a general doctor in France as a foreigner usually costs around €25 if the doctor is part of the French health system. If the doctor isn’t, the fee can be higher. You’ll likely have to pay out-of-pocket unless you have insurance that covers you in France.

If you see an online doctor with Doctorsa, the  overall pricing will vary depending on the providers. Each of them competes on every request, bidding a fair price for your specific need. The average cost is 25 Euros for an online doctor visit. In-person appointments, specialists, and lab-work depend on the city. Send a request to find out, there’s no obligation to book and you get to choose your provider.
The visit does not include the cost of medications. For example, in Europe, the cost of an antibiotic treatment ranges from 5 to 15 euros approximately.

The EF EPI (English Proficiency Index) is a yearly report that ranks countries and regions by how well their adult populations speak English. France is ranked 43rd out of 113 countries, falling into the “Moderate Proficiency” band.

With Doctorsa, you can be confident that you’ll always be seen by an English-speaking doctor in France. Many of our doctors also speak additional languages, ensuring clear communication no matter your needs.

You need to get a prescription for antibiotics issued by a medical doctor or a dentist. Pharmacists cannot dispense antibiotics without a script. You can get a prescription without seeing a doctor in person, with Doctorsa. Through an online doctor visit, if necessary, you can receive an express prescription you can fill at the closest pharmacy.

If you need emergency medical help in France, i.e. if you are in a life-threatening situation, here’s what you can do:

You can go directly to the Emergency Department (ED) at any hospital. If it’s a serious emergency, you can call for an ambulance by dialing 112, the emergency number in France. In more remote areas, helicopters may also be used for transport.

When you arrive at the ED, a nurse will assess your condition to determine the severity. If you have a life-threatening condition, you’ll be taken straight in for treatment. If your condition isn’t urgent, you may be asked to wait or given some initial care while you wait for a doctor to be available.

Once you see a doctor, they will examine you and might consult a specialist if needed, which could require additional waiting time. After your examination, you may be sent home with a prescription or referral, or if necessary, admitted to the hospital.

If you’re not admitted, you’ll receive a bill for the services. Normally, 80% of the costs are covered by the public health insurance system, but if you are a foreigner you may need to pay 100% out-of-pocket unless you have complementary health insurance, which can cover this cost.

In emergencies, your health is the priority, and you’ll receive the care you need, whether it’s on-site, in the ambulance, or at the hospital.

Yes, you can with Doctorsa. An online doctor might be right for you if you are far from your doctor and don’t have time to search for a doctor appointment. An online doctor is perfect for minor but urgent situations or when you need medical assistance during off-hours such as weekends and holidays. An online doctor is not for life-threatening situations.

Yes, whenever you submit your request it is instantly received by the doctors active at that time. Whether it’s late at night, on a Sunday morning, or on New Year’s Eve, there’s always someone on the other side who’s ready to see you. When you receive an option for an appointment, there’s a person behind it (a doctor) who’s read your request and is willing to assist you.

Yes, antibiotics can be prescribed during a video consultation with a doctor. Antibiotics in Europe are not available over the counter and pharmacies do not have doctors on site. To buy antibiotics, you’ll need to carry a doctor’s prescription to a pharmacy. For example, the cost of antibiotics typically ranges from 5 to 15 euros.

The platform complies with international data protection regulations, including GDPR. When you submit a request on Doctorsa, the content of the request is shared with all available doctors while keeping your data anonymized until you select a provider. Once you’ve chosen a doctor and booked with them, your provided information and contact details will only be shared with them. Doctorsa will never sell your personal information.

Yes, it is possible to pay with insurance. During the checkout process, you’ll be prompted to provide your insurance carrier information. Alongside this, you’ll also need to enter your payment details. The consultation cost will be temporarily withheld until our team verifies your coverage with your insurance provider. Once confirmed, the reserved amount will be released. However, if we’re unable to confirm your coverage or if your insurance doesn’t cover the payment, the reserved amount will be charged. In such cases, you’ll promptly receive an invoice, enabling you to claim a refund directly.
